    Tak-Wing Ngo, University of Macau in China, will discuss the several contradictory trends that states are presently facing. These include on the one hand the rise of multinationals, the increase in international labour migration and the proliferation of transnational civil networks, which has eroded the conventional boundary and jurisdiction of the state. Other trends, like the global financial crisis and the environmental challenge, are highlighting the relevance of the state in dealing with collective action problems.  In these circumstances, what will be the future role of the state? Should the state be strengthened as a strong actor or should it be reduced to become a caretaker?

    The Van Lanschot Lecture is an annual event at which an internationally renowned professor in the field of finance and/or economics is invited to give his or her opinion on a current economic topic. On May 23, 2012, Professor Hans-Werner Sinn will hold the 7th Van Lanschot Lecture in the Concert Hall of Theaters Tilburg. The title of his lecture is "The European Balance of Payment Crisis".

    Hans?Werner Sinn is an influential German economist. He has published numerous studies on economic risk theory, economic cycles, environmental economics, and foreign trade issues. Since 1984 Sinn has been full professor in the faculty of economics at the University of Munich. Since 1 February 1999 he has been president of the Ifo Institute.

    Bijna 30 jaar is door velen het evangelie van meer marktwerking gepredikt. Deze neoliberale aanpak heeft een generatie lang welvaartsgroei opgeleverd, maar ligt nu onder vuur. In de financie?le sector heeft de marktordening geleid tot falende ondernemingen, falende markten, integriteitsproblemen en een verlies aan maatschappelijk vertrouwen. Dergelijke verschijnselen zijn echter niet beperkt tot de financie?le sector, ook bij de woningcorporaties, in de zorg en in het onderwijs hebben we er inmiddels ervaring mee. Dat doet de vraag rijzen of we niet te ver doorgeschoten zijn in het stimuleren van de marktwerking. Of zijn we juist niet ver genoeg gegaan en was/is er eigenlijk sprake van pseudomarkten? Hierover gaat een tweedelige conferentie van Holland Financial Centre en Duisenberg school of finance.

    Jean-Claude Trichet, de voormalige president van de Europese Centrale Bank (ECB), spreekt op woensdag 6 juni 2012 de achttiende Mandeville Lezing uit. De Mandeville Lezing wordt gehouden door personen met grote maatschappelijk verdiensten en is het equivalent van het eredoctoraat. De Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam kent laatstgenoemde toe op grond van wetenschappelijke verdiensten.
    Trichet wordt geëerd voor zijn optreden als topman van de ECB, zowel op strategisch vlak als voor zijn optreden tijdens de eurocrisis. Hij heeft zich gemanifesteerd als een echte Europeaan in het krachtenveld van nationale monetaire belangen. Getuigen daarvan zijn het Europese Financieel Stabiliteitsfonds en zijn pleidooi voor een verdergaande politieke integratie.
